C Luis Suarez Staring at Lengthy Ban After 'Disgusting' Actions Following Leagues Cup Final

Inter Miami’s Luis Suarez could be staring down the barrel at a lengthy ban after his behaviour between the final whistle of Javier Mascherano’s side’s 3-0 loss to Seattle Sounders in the Leagues Cup final and the trophy lift. Osaze De Rosario, Alex Roldan and Paul Rothrock were all on target for The Sounders.
But, irrespective of the brilliant win for Brian Schmetzer's men, much of the post-match discourse is regarding Suarez’s obscene behaviour. The ex-Liverpool man got into a few minor altercations in regulation time in what can be considered a heated affair from minute one to full-time.
This is, of course, not the first time that Suarez, who's plundered 38 strikes in 77 outings for his Major League Soccer (MLS) employers, has been involved in controversy. In the past, he had bitten opponents – Otman Bakka, Branislav Ivanovic and Giorgio Chiellini – on three separate occasions.
Back in 2011, just four months after he joined Liverpool from Ajax, Suarez was also handed an eight-match suspension from the Football Association (FA), whose investigation had judged him to have been racially abusive to Manchester United defender Patrice Evra.
Luis Suarez Could Face Lengthy Ban for 'Disgusting' Behaviour After Leagues Cup Final Loss
Once the final whistle had been blown, Suarez – who is widely regarded as one of the greatest strikers in football history – decided it was time to confront Sounders midfielder Obed Vargas. Suarez put his arm tightly around the neck of the 20-year-old before he was pulled off and a swarm of players joined the melee.
Sergio Busquets, who also played alongside Suarez at Barcelona, was on hand to back up his teammate. Instead of trying to defuse the situation, it appeared that the seasoned midfielder punched Vargas.
After being pulled away from Vargas, Suarez – who, having lost 3-0 in the final, descended into a red mist – was then filmed berating Sounders director of security Gene Ramirez. The footage also appeared to show Suarez spitting at said member of staff.
Suarez’s Inter Miami teammate Oscar Ustari attempted to intervene before the former Ajax and Atletico Madrid forward spat in the face of Ramirez. Again, players from both sides needed to be forcefully separated after a sea of bodies came together for a mass brawl on the pitch.
MLS chiefs have cracked down on the act of spitting at players or match officials in the past, often handing out multi-game suspensions. Hector Herrera was slapped with a three-match ban for spitting in the direction of a referee – one game for the red card he received after VAR intervention, and two more from the league office. Just two years ago, in 2021, Real Salt Lake right-back. Jasper Loffelsend was suspended for two games for spitting on an opponent.
