The French foreign ministry underscored that the ramped-up offensive comes amid “an extremely serious humanitarian and health context,” with lack of food supplies and basic necessities for emergency care.

“France once again calls on Israel to immediately lift all restrictions imposed on the entry of humanitarian aid into Gaza to allow its immediate, massive, and unhindered delivery,” the statement said.

United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres said he believes Israel is not open to a “serious negotiation” to reach a ceasefire in Gaza and secure the release of hostages.

Speaking at a news conference in New York, Guterres was responding to a question about whether member states should push for a force to protect civilians in Gaza.

Guterres said such a force would not be possible, as it would be rejected by the US and Israel. He also pointed out that with 400 UN staffers having been killed in the Israel-Hamas war, the UN does not have the instruments to effectively protect civilians. However, he said that an immediate ceasefire and such an international force would be an objective he would “strongly cherish.”

“I would like to have an immediate ceasefire, and having an immediate ceasefire, to have an international force able to protect civilians, this would be an objective that I would strongly cherish,” Guterres said. “But at the present moment, it looks like Israel is determined to go up to the end and not open to a serious negotiation for a ceasefire.”

Israeli conductor Ilan Volkov spoke out about the war in Gaza while performing at BBC Proms in London.

“What’s happening now is atrocious and horrific in a scale that’s unimaginable,” he said.
